Pure Acai

The acai palm is a tall, slender tree, native to Central and South America. It is cultivated for it's fruit and superior hearts of palm.

The name acai (or açaí to give it the correct Portugese spelling) comes from an adaptation of the Tupian (native South Americam language) word "ïwaca'i" which means 'fruit that cries'.

In recent years, due to it's nutritional value, global demand for the fruit has expanded rapidly, and açaí is now primarily cultivated for that purpose.

Eight species of acai palm exist and as mentioned, all are native to Central and South America. The Palm grows mainly in swamps and floodplains.

Acai can be sold as frozen pulp, spray dried fruit, a juice, found as an ingredient in various products, or as we like here at Sanctum Health, sold in capsule form containing Organic Freeze Dried Free Trade Pure Acai. Freeze dried acai berry supplements have a higher retention of nutritional value than other processes, because as the water content is removed, a rich pulp is made which is higher in nutrient concentration than the raw fruit itself.

The original fruit, a small, round, black-purple drupe about 1 inch in circumference. It looks very much like a grape but has less pulp.

In a study of populations in the Brazilian Amazon, the acai palm was considered the most important plant species because of the proportion of the daily diet made up by the fruit - 42%!

Greenpeace International have stated that the acai palm is an important non-wood forest product in terms of income for the Amazon river delta population. It has also been noted that productionof acai palms can be considerably less damaging to the environment than sugar cane, cattle farming and other cultivation choices.
